Setenay Sustenceli

RN

Setenay Sustenceli headshotIn February 2023, huge earthquakes and aftershocks rocked Southern Turkey, leading to a widespread humanitarian crisis. Setenay Sustenceli, a registered nurse in the surgical unit at Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center, had gone overseas to visit her family in Turkey, who lived in the affected region.

When the event happened, there was no way to reach family members at first – all communication means were lost. After ensuring that her Turkish family members were safe and had housing, it was imperative for Setenay to reach the affected area and help rescue the injured.

Upon arrival, Setenay jumped into action with a priority on immediate medical needs. She provided humanitarian services and nursing care to those who could not leave the area; many of whom had wounds and injuries that needed immediate attention. She helped those who escaped from underneath buildings – this included emotional and medical support.

The focus shifted to providing support to the region, collecting items for the people living there, including generating funds to support immediate needs such as tents, sleeping bags, clothing, diapers, electronic items, dry food items, and water.

She was there to provide all that she could, and her presence was felt by many. Many lives were lost at that time, though many were saved and changed because she happened to be there. Her support for the Turkish community during this tragic event made a difference in so many lives.

Thank you, Setenay, for your heroic response in the face of a life-threatening natural disaster, providing nursing care and humanitarian aid during the earthquake in Turkey. Congratulations you are a 2023 Nurses With Global Impact Honoree!
