Lucy Wangu Thang'a
RNLucy Wangu Thang’a is a Registered Nurse and Midwife who has studied Palliative Care Nursing, HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Care, Dental Nursing, and Counselling Psychology. With her broad base of knowledge and a strong clinical background, followed by a proven track record of nursing leadership, Lucy was elected by her peers to become a CICIAMS President of the African Region, serving the maximum of two 4-year elected terms.
Before Lucy’s Presidency, little multi-nation African nurse member cooperation occurred among English-speaking African nations. With her as the CICIAMS African Regional President, that changed. Lucy promoted a culture of African self-organizing and self-reliance, achievable through sharing innovations and limited resources. Seven country members from across Africa became active participants in CICIAMS Programs.
Lucy tackled the hot issues plaguing Africa during that time. She championed a joint study in Kenya and Uganda investigating HIV/AIDS transmission in Southern & East Africa. Under Lucy’s leadership, programs were developed and implemented to address study findings.
Regarding the HIV/AIDS study, workshops for couples were created and offered which focused on the couples as units of behavioral change. Many couples, particularly in Kenya, evaluated the workshops as having post-program benefits.
Lucy conducted educational offerings for community healthcare workers and organized regular scientific conferences, annual recollections, and spiritual retreats. Activities such as medical camps have now become permanent annual events.
What do you do when you don’t have available literature to support needed teaching? Lucy, studied the latest professional developments on the subject at the finest schools, so she could co-author an HIV/AIDS Counselling Guide adopted by KCCB to train healthcare workers.
