Thandi Mgcina

Professional Nurse, Comprehensive Primary Healthcare • Rhiza Babuyile, Diepsloot, South Africa

Sr. Thandi Mgcina has 35-years’ experience working with disadvantaged populations in South Africa and has a passion for community health.

Nurse Thandi Mgcina, NWGI Nurse Honoree 2019Thandi established and ran a day clinic in Diepsloot, which was the only clinic in the area that provided comprehensive primary healthcare services, including antenatal.

She managed a staff of 25 people, who established community health committees for HIV/AIDs, TB and Chronic Disease support groups.

Subsequently, some people from the support groups were trained and became employees — which provided a salary, and restored confidence, self-esteem and hope to them and many in the community!

Thandi was promoted to manage 10 clinics and the number of patients seen per day grew from 20 to over 100.

This was all made possible through Thandi’s commitment and efforts as she starts her day earlier than the clinic’s opening time so patient’s wait time is significantly shortened. Thandi is a true patient advocate!

Even after retiring in 2014, Thandi continues to give back running mobile clinics while mentoring the next generation of nurses.

Sr. Thandi remains an asset to the Rhiza Babryile organization.
