Susana Paola Godoy Hidalgo has participated in voluntary working experiences since she was a nursing student, teaching health education to vulnerable populations. Initially working in communities in Santa Cruz, a rural area of the sixth region of Chile, that didn’t receive water and sewage services teaching about hygiene and health care.

Nurse Susana Paola Godoy Hidalgo, NWGI Nurse Honoree 2018She then specialized in women’s health and taught students from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Nursing School, guiding them at a public Hospital Dr. Sótero del Río in Gynecology and Puerperium services. Additionally, she started working with women teaching Natural Family Planning, forming midwifes in Family Health Centers of the university.

In 1995 she received training and certification as a monitor in Teen STAR program, a sexuality and effective program for kids and adolescents with a holistic approach of the person. This allowed her to start applying the program in different public schools, especially working with students at high risk, like the ones from “La Puerta” School who received drug addict students.

Currently, she works at SOCHIDES Renca School which is a school with high vulnerability and is located in Renca area. Students come from low income neighborhoods that are below the poverty line and a percentage from other areas. This percentage can be described as students who come from broken homes, mostly living only with their mothers who assume the role of head of household. They are surrounded by unemployment, violence, drug abuse and trafficking, and school dropout.

In SOCHIDES Renca, she gives lectures to parents and students about sexuality and promoting responsibility. Under this context, she works with students of ages from 7 to 12 years old teaching them about the changes of puberty and to recognize their ovulation as a sign of health. She has also worked with Physical Education teachers promoting healthy nutrition and lifestyle.

Susana implemented a nursing office with collaboration of the school’s assistant where she cares for the kids during the school day. She also receives parents to teach them about the holistic care of their children at home. At the same time, she has implemented workshops with school’s teachers she has developed a school coexistence plan to prevent harassment and other risky behaviors.

In 2018 she created “Fundación Educacional María Isabel,” an educational foundation with a goal to promote a high-quality public education, focusing funds on improving the school’s facilities and enable friendly and comfortable educational areas which dignify their lives.

Susana has developed her vocation serving to the community mostly in SOCHIDES Renca, where she has been able to help students receive a better education, not only in health area but also in curricular programs, workshops that allow them to have better opportunities and develop their passions like choir, orchestra, nutrition, communal garden, dancing and football. She has participated in the robotics workshop and organized the science fair where the students were able to show their projects in environment care, healthy life style and science in general.
