Head Nurse • Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem in PalestineSuha Muhammad Oweineh was born and raised in a small village outside of Bethlehem called Battir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Palestine. After finishing high school, she received a degree in nursing. Suha began working for Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem in 1990, and has been there since, for nearly 30 years.
Holy Family Hospital is committed to delivering life-saving, excellent care to all in the Holy Land. In 1990, Saint John Paul II asked the Order of Malta, a 900+ year old lay Catholic religious organization dedicated to serving the sick and the poor while defending the faith, to run the hospital as a dedicated maternal child hospital.
Dedicated, exceptional staff, like Suha, illustrate just how serious the Hospital takes its commitment to serving anyone who walks through its doors, without regard to ethnicity, financial need, or creed. During the Second Intifada, a dangerous time of unrest in the Bethlehem region, everyone in the surrounding area were under curfew. Because no one could leave their homes, and Suha was at the hospital at the time, she was confined there for one week. During that week, Suha worked 24 hours around the clock to care for the women that the hospital could bring in during the 30-minute afternoon daily ceasefire. Because no one could leave shelter due to fear of being caught in crossfire, the hospital was incredibly short staffed.
Although she missed her family, Suha was committed to building strong relationships with other hospital staff in order to save as many lives as were brought through the doors of Holy Family Hospital each day. Highly experienced and educated, Suha is a vital member of Holy Family Hospital’s staff.
Moments like this reinforced Suha’s love for nursing. Suha’s selfless actions reinforced her commitment to Holy Family Hospital but, more importantly, reflect her genuine love and respect for all of humanity. Suha’s sacrifice for her family, her patients and her community, is what makes her workplace an oasis of peace.
Holy Family Hospital is a Catholic teaching maternity hospital in Bethlehem, Palestine. It opened with 869 deliveries and reported over 4,500 deliveries in 2018.

Its Medical Mobile Clinic goes out daily to care for the medical needs of women and children refugees, as well as residents of remote desert communities.
