Sarah Rubino
MSN, APRN-CNM, Certified Nurse-Midwife • Catholic Medical Mission Board, Nzara, South SudanSarah Rubino earned her Bachelor of Nursing in 2013 from Wheeling Jesuit University, and in 2018 a Master of Science in Nurse-Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University, the first school in the US to train nurse midwives.
She dedicated five years to Wheeling Hospital in West Virginia, serving as a nurse assistant, ortho-neuro and surgical nurse, and as a float nurse. This opportunity allowed her to channel her passion for serving others and professional expertise to assist diverse and impoverished communities.
The role of float nurse challenged her and enabled her to develop a broader skill set from working in Women’s Services, Pediatrics, Oncology, Med/Surg floors, ER, IMU, CVSD departments.
She received her formal nurse-midwife/nurse practitioner clinical experience from Marion OBGYN Inc. and Ohio Health Marion General Hospital.
Since high school, she has participated in service-oriented opportunities that have taken her to Jeremie, Haiti to provide prenatal care to pregnant women, to El Salvador to work with disabled children, and to other cities in the United States like New Orleans, LA, Camden, NJ, and Wheeling, WV to serve low-income and vulnerable communities
Thirteen years after hearing a talk about an orphanage in South Africa, Sarah decided to join CMMB – Healthier Lives Worldwide to serve as a midwife nurse in Nzara, South Sudan with her husband Martin Rubino, whom she married in December 2017. Both work in St. Theresa Hospital, Sarah assists in delivering and caring for premature babies, and Martin, an engineer by profession, supports construction efforts of a maternity ward, surgical ward, and operating theatre.
While volunteering at the hospital, Sarah has had various medical experiences with her patients that have made her realize how precious human life is with all its ups and downs.
Additionally, Sarah has helped gather up enough tiny clothing, hats, and diaper covers for all premature and low birth weight infants — enough to last Nzara for over a year! This has helped keep babies warm during the cold nights of the dry season and has lowered hypothermia and hypoglycemia levels.
She understood it was her mission to take care of these vulnerable babies and to teach others to do the same as there wasn’t anyone available in the Nzara to ensure their wellbeing.
Thanks to Sarah’s generosity, the hospital can now count on an incubator and a bubble CPAP machine to help premature babies with breathing and increase their chances of surviving in this challenging environment. These new tools will help her as the community enters the rainy season and mothers are affected with malaria and other infections causing premature labor and birth.
Sarah exemplifies CMMB’s four core values of collaboration, love, excellence and respect. South Sudan is fortunate to have such a kind, self-less, and inspirational individual providing locally sustainable, quality health solutions to its women, children, and the rest of its community.
