She began her career at Hackensack University Medical Center as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse. Decades after practicing this level of care, she became widely known by many patients and families as their ‘support rock’ and as an excellent nurse educator.
As a dedicated clinician, Mickey applies her extraordinary skill and generosity of spirit to provide exceptional care for children with congenital heart defects (CHD), while serving on international medical missions for more than two decades. Most recently, her travels have taken her to Mexico, Peru, Haiti, Bolivia, and Kosovo to help children, and their families, with CHD. “They’re all my children,” Mickey explains. She is driven by a passion for nursing, patient and family advocacy, and a love of education.
Mickey currently serves on two medical mission teams: Gift of Life International and HeartCare International. She travels overseas four to five times per year and has completed a total of sixty medical missions. Her team performs diagnostic and interventional catheterizations, as well as closed and open-heart surgeries for children affected by a congenital heart defect. They also provide training and education for medical teams in host countries, empowering them to independently provide treatment.
In addition, Mickey serves as co-founder, president and board member of the CHD Coalition, a nonprofit support and advocacy group, she chairs a walk-a-thon which this year drew more than 1,700 participants and raised more than $170,000. An advocate and an activist, she has also traveled to Washington, DC with concerned parents to lobby in support of the Congenital Heart Futures Act, which provides federal funding for research initiatives.
Patients and their families often call and ask to speak specifically with Mickey. Her dedication is equally apparent in her mission work. Mickey goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of her patients, whether at work in her New Jersey-based practice, or in facilities around the world.
