Eileen Carrigg Specchio
PhD, RN, Professor • College of Saint Elizabeth, New Jersey, USAThroughout her forty years of nursing, Eileen Specchio has worked tirelessly to spearhead efforts designed to reach and to provide nursing care to the poor and underserved living in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Liberia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States.
As an advocate for justice, caring, and excellence in nursing, Eileen initiated and led nursing outreach teams since the year 2001.
Mission services under Eileen’s direction have served as many as 1000 patients a day.
Eileen coordinated Annual Service Learning to the Dominican Republic from 2006-2016, that’s every year for ten years.
In 2010, Eileen took a sabbatical leave to be instrumental in the development of a Master of Science in Nursing Education program in Monrovia, Liberia.
From 2011-2013 Eileen mentored the “Empowering Women Artisans in the Dominican Republic” which helped women learn jewelry making, how to begin a bank account and how to develop financial goals—now known as micro-businesses.
In an effort to broaden and sustain outreach efforts, Eileen’s mission work has aligned with multiple organizations and schools including the College of St Elizabeth, University of Notre Dame, Trinitas, multiple Chapters of Sigma Theta Tau, and Sisters of Charity of New Jersey to only name a few.
Currently, Eileen has paved the way for international nurses to attend enrichment classes in the U.S.
This coming 2019 summer, Eileen has arranged Haitian nurses to travel to the US. During their time here, the Haitian nurses will learn best practices by participating in high fidelity simulations.
Eileen has successfully enlisted volunteers from several hospitals to teach in this program along with faculty at the College of St Elizabeth School of Nursing.
Eileen truly cares about those she touches and believes nursing is a vocation and as one can see from her accomplishments, Eileen humbly continues God’s work on a daily basis.
She is a civic leader dedicated to God, nursing, family, and community, and is a role model and friend to many and has inspired a multitude of individuals, organizations, and schools to also participate in local service and distant missions which have had and continue to have a GLOBAL IMPACT.
In memory of her daughter, Emily, Eileen has developed a nursing outreach program in the Dominican Republic and returns annually.
