Later in her career, Mary joined NEPA Community Health Center as the COO, a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) serving the under and uninsured people of rural Susquehanna county, one of the poorest counties in Pennsylvania with great medical, dental and mental health disparities, especially for women and children.
With a steadfast commitment and vision to provide quality primary care, OB/GYN, psychiatric and behavioural health services, Mary provided the leadership to strategically plan, improve and expand access to health care for those in greatest need in Susquehanna County. In less than a year, Mary was named Chief Executive Officer of NEPA Community Health Center.
In terms of global health, Mary has worked as a clinical nurse volunteer with Archangel Airborne, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides transformative humanitarian services for populations at risk and employs the strategic and tactical models of military special operations groups, utilizing aviation, land and sea resources to effectively insert specialty teams, advisors, and critically necessary supplies and equipment.
Since 2012 Mary’s work through Archangel Airborne has been focused in Haiti where she has worked intensively with populations at risk suffering from the oppression of disparity and disaster by assisting with emergency response and disaster recovery, providing direct medical and nursing care delivery, community-based education and training, EMS system development and advisory/logistical support for infrastructure development.
In early 2018, Mary became an active supporter of RAD-AID International’s nursing program, supporting the launch of a new nursing project in Grenada to advance radiology, nursing and public health education.
Mary travelled to Grenada in September 2018 to establish in-country nurse and healthcare contacts, conduct a RAD-AID nursing assessment to understand the gaps in healthcare resources, training and education. She also provided didactic education included topics covering radiology safety and infection control.
Future goals for RAD-AID Grenada that Mary will be spearheading this year include strengthening existing in-country partnerships and providing education for the radiology and nursing teams.
Mary Wetherall has exemplified outstanding nursing leadership in the advancement of nursing clinical practice and health care administration for low-resource communities both in the United States through her work at the federal health care centers in Pennsylvania as well as internationally through her work with Archangel Airborne in Haiti and with RAD-AID International in Grenada.
